So what could be better than growing your very own lettuce to add to your tasty salads. This variety of lettuce is probably the "Iceberg" that you will find on the grocer's shelf, with large well wrapped heads of shiny bright green leaves. It is a very crisp variety and stands well at maturity. Seed Count: 1,200 WHEN TO SOW March to June WHERE TO SOW Early sowings in trays under glass at 13C. Later sowings direct into the growing site 1cm (1/2") deep in rows 30cm (12") apart. WHAT TO DO NEXT Glasshouse seedlings should be pricked off into trays 5cm (2") apart as soon as large enough to handle. Gradually harden off for planting in growing site 25cm (9") apart. Thin outdoor sowings to 25cm (9") apart, thinnings can be transplanted. MATURITY June Onwards HANDY TIP Never let lettuce crops dry out. The secret of good growing is a fast growth with no checks from drought or cold. NUTRITIONAL VALUE A good source of antioxidants such as beta-carotene, lutein and vitamin C as well as vitamin K. Sowings begin in February under glass at 15C followed by outdoor sowings under cloches until late autumn. Sowings for overwinter production uses cloches and glasshouse. Germination difficulties may be experienced in July and August as lettuce seed will go into dormancy if sown in very hot weather.
